We recently picked a 48 M, wide front, dual
wheels, with an LPG conversion. It's a really
nice tractor. The only problem is a steady knock
in the transmission. It does it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd,
4th, reverse, and neutral but not in 5th. When the clutch is disengaged it quits. Any ideas what's
causing this knock? Thanks Greg W.

I agree with the other two posts. One more thing to try is to remove the lower cover under the hydraulic pump motor. Then look up into the main casting. The upper shaft is the input to the trans and the lower is from the countershaft and exits out to drive the hydraulic pump. If the upper input shaft housing has heavy oil deposits coming out of it then one of the two (or maybe both) bearings is out. This would make the constant mesh gear run with a wobble and the uneven wear pattern could cause tooth breakage.

Thanks for the input guys!! As soon as things warm up here in N. Mich. I'm going to pull the top off the tranny and take a look. Greg W.

My 49 M does the same thing but it is only occasional.Kinda lie knock, knock stop knock, knock, knock, etc.Like the other reply Ithought it was the constant mesh gear or a bearing.Iopened her up and the gear was good so I changed every bearing in the thing and it still does it .Been that way for years,so far its still going.A MYSTERY!!!!!?????

You have a tooth off constant running gear which affects all the gears except 5th. You might also just have a bearing out pull the top and take a look it won't be hard to find.
