DOES ANYBODY KNOW THE DURABILITY OF THE GERMAN DIESEL ON THE 786? HOW MANY WERE MADE?
I'M THINKING OF BUYING ONE FOR TRACTOR PULLING
WHICH MEANS I WILL BE ADDING A TURBO OR TURBOS.

I think it will be too heavy for the displacement.
I'd suggest a 986 which you could upgrade to a
DT466 and still have a stock-looking block. The only German diesels I know were dogs.

Brian, have you ever operated a German diesel?

It will pull with the best of them.

I drove 2 786s in the early 80s. Both fitted with
rejay turbos. They will outpull anything in their
class. As hard as you'd work them they wouldn't
burn 3 gal an hour. I saw one tractor I ran a year
or so back-has 7000 hours and still going strong.
Has a competent operator all this time. Would be my #1 choice for this horsepower range.
