I have a 1948 Farmall C that sit for quiet a few years. The old gas that was in the tank has turned into varnish. I have tried using my safe-t-clean parts washer fluid and also paint thinner along with about 20 3/4" nuts in the tank. I have removed about a quart of sludge so far but still have a lot left.
I was told to use muratic acid to clean the gas tank. Little leary of using acid, I don't want to mess up anything, or ruin the tank.
The local radiator shop claims that they can clean it for about a $125.00, but this seems to be a little bit too much at this time. The metal on the outside of this tank is in very good condition therefore I do wish to reuse it.
Does anybody have any ideas that may clean the inside of a gas tank? Also would it be wise to use KREEM in it after cleaning? I have heard both good and bad about this product.
All ideas would be of great help. Thanks

LB-If you can sneak into the local car wash, you can really get the crud out with the soapy pressure washer. Then get it in the sun to dry out good. After that, you can tell if it's bad enough to need a sealer. Good luck. Paul+

I have tried lots of things to clean tanks, and the best is the radiator shop. Mine charges $25 to soak it in his tank over a weekend. Comes out clean as a whistle. Gas tank sealer should say on the can that it is compatable with alchol fuels, since some gas has alchol in it, and the cheaper sealers will disolve into goo with alchol.

I have used paint stripper in the tank, pour in a qt. and shake it around then let it set awhile then shake it a time or two again and let it set, then wash the whole mess out.It works good for me, \
Also I have used Lacquer thinner with the nut and a six pack trick, put the lacquer thinner in the tank W/ol' nuts or small bolts or what have you and shake drink a brew and shake some more repeat till you are tanked,er the tank is cleen and you don't care( actually leave the thinner in there sometimes a day or two shaking it when ever you think of it. This works equally well. Oh if you have a screen in the tank, take it out as all the shaking and nuts will ruin it.

Hi little bubba,
don't know if this would help but. on my h which had a pretty clean tank except the very bottom which had old gumed gas. i put lotts of injector cleaner in the tank and ran the tractor until i started getting loose stuff stopping up sediment bowl. purchased one of those kerosene siphon pumps from wallmart and a funnel with brass screen in it. i siphoned the gas and gum out through the funnel into a fuel can. really dug around in the tank with the siphon tube. i got about a cup full of brittle coffie looking stuff out. i'm sure i'll have to do it again soon. but has worked so far. hope this helps

If they are just going to clean it, $125 sounds a bit high. Maybe that includes putting sealer in it. I had to put sealer in the tank on my C because it was leaking. I got the sealer from Eastwood, and part of the cleaning process included using muratic acid. By the time I bought the sealer kit, paid the shipping and then found I had to buy muratic acid and acetone, it cost me around $65 just for the materials to do the sealing. There are complete instructions on how to do it with the sealer kit from Eastwood.
