A friend of mine has an opportunity to purchase a 1975 International 140 with a three point and fast hitch. He was wondering if he can use his 3-point bush hog formerly used on his Ferguson 30 on this tractor due to the offset pto. If so, does the u-joint wear much faster or is their an efficiency loss?

Thanks

John (NC)

I have a 140 with bush hog and it really works well. No problems with the U-joints. If everything will clear you have a real good combination. It looks like it would never work but it does. Haas is correct about override clutch for safety. Good luck and be safe!

If none of the hitch parts get in the way of the shaft, the offset is not enought to bother the universal joints. They actually work a little better and last longer if they have a small offset rather than running straight. You will need an overrunning clutch for the pto. If you do not have that, the inertia of the heavy bush hog blade will push the 140, because is runs off the transmission directly connected to the wheels. The overrunning clutch allows the bush hog to free wheel when you stop the tractor. I still recall the time as a boy that my Dad had to go pull the suburban neighor with 5 acres out of his pond because he could not stop the little AC tractor that had the bush hog on it.
