PTO wont engage

I recently traded a Super A for IH 444. Currently I have to start the tractor with the PTO engaged if to use. The PTO grinds if I try to engage while running. The clutch is depressed while trying to engage. Any help would be appreciated. PS. Can anyone give me any history on the 444 model?

i had a similar problem with my 354 last fall. i hadnt run the pto for awhile, and when i tried to engage it, it just shook my arm and wouldnt engage. i finally got it in, with a pto driven bucket spreader attached, and seeded the field. after that, it has gone in and out just fine. check the archive though, because there was a thread on this back last september i think when i posted the same question.
