What type of gear oil, engine oil should I buy today for my '40 B? Also, I called all over town yesterday looking for the right muffler. The auto parts store finally told me that if I had the dimensions, they'd try to match one up. What would you recommend? Also, how do you go about attaching the muffler to the threaded manifold? Should I get a nipple of threaded pipe; is that the right thread? Anxiously awaiting responses.

I use Quaker State 10W40 in my BN cause that's what the previous owner used. Prestone 50/50 in the radiator for the same reason. Haven't had to fill gear lube yet but will probobly use 80/90 when I need to. Remember, most of todays products were not invented yet when your tractor was made so just because it isn't in the manual doesn't mean you shouldn't use it, it just means they didn't have it back then. I get most of my supply's at the Case/IH dealer. The can look most of it up with the origional part numbers. Then they usually cross reference to a more modern or Case part number. They are usually a little more expensive though. Quality Farm and Fleet has a good selection of mufflers. Have fun. Dave BN.

For oil I use Case/IH #1, 15w40 oil. I use it in all my tractors, even my newer MF. The 15 will allow to flow on cold mornings, or winter, and the 40 protects better at operating temperature. This oil is designed for the heavy duty, billion dollar tractors. It should definitely be good for a little B. I use 80w-90 in the transmission. I buy mine from IH also....Dave

I used a 8 inch long pipe nipple, I think it was 1 1/2 inch pipe. I got my muffler at the Case/IH dealer.

I used an 1." i.d. by 8" nipple too that I got from the hardware store. Worked just fine.

The gear oil should be SAE 90, thinned when necessary with kerosene and the engine can be SAE 30 weight, lighter or heavier depending on air temperature and the level of use of the engine. This according to my owners manual of some 55 years ago. I believe I'd stay away from multi-weight oil in the engine. You know how another brand of beer tastes different!

There are many webs sites, including this one, that have a better muffler solution than your dealer suggested. The muffler does not come with an exhaust pipe, which threads in the the manifold. The exaust pipe can be purchased as well. The assembly should be two piece, connected with muffler clamps to enable you to remove the hood without having to attemept to unscrew the exhaust pipe from the manifold each time, you merely take the muffler off the exhaust pipe by loosening the clamp.
