I'm considering buying a Farmall M as a first tractor experience. I will mainly use it for mowing and light garden work and am considering adding a 3 point after/if I buy it. My questions are these:
1)I've heard that the PTO is not "live" , on this model does it mean that it turns constantly whether the clutch is pressed or not or does it mean the PTO turns only when the transmition is engaged and the tractor is moving? This is important because I would like to be able to hook up an auger to set fence posts.
2)I've also heard that the standard hydraulics are not live and if this is true does this mean that the only way to raise or lower a 3 point attachment is when the tractor is moving?

Don't know you consider "light garden work and mowing", but I would not think an M would be a very good choice for that kind of work. The M is a big heavy tractor and more suited to heavy work. It does not have power steering and does not steer very easy, so if you have a lot of manuevering to do, it will develop your muscles. Also if you add a 3 pt hitch, you really need to also add a 2 way spool hydraulic valve to get good control of the hitch. The Lift all hydraulic system is a one way system and when you release it, the implement will drop all the way and then you have to pick it back up to where you want it. Of course you can use stops on the hydraulic cylinders.

Kerry,

Like Red said, the clutch needs to be let out for the PTO and hydraulics to work. The tractor can be in neutral and not moving though. It would work ok to auger post holes with.

Good Luck with the potential purchase,
Bob

Kerry both the PTO and the belly pump liftall hydraulics only work when the clutch is let out. They are unfortunately not alive.
