My A leaked coolant from the acess hole under the flywheel. DAVE T (a really smart guy) advised it was a frost plug on the backside of the block. After splitting the A I proved DAVE T was correct. Just prior to putting the A into the work shed I noticed that the clutch didn't seem to be working (when you push the pedal). It work fine prior to the leak. Now I have it apart and want to know if there is anyway of telling the condition of the clutch. It did clean a lot of sludge from around the bearing and off of the little spring loaded thingys on the back of the clutch. Any suggstions?

Your sudden clutch problems may be caused by the leaking coolant out of your old frost plug. Take off the pressure plate and check every thing out. If your graphit throw out bearing has minimal wear, and still goes around, then I wouldn't replace it. The replacement one for my Super C was over $130, unless you want to.. Be sure to replace the pilot bearing, they are cheap ($7.00 or so) I used one of these 3M "Paint and Rust Remover" wheels. They work really slick. Just put it in your drill and clean your disk, pressure plate and flywheel, then clean it off real good with brake cleaner.....but off course if you clutch is shot, then it's shot and needs to be replace.....just check it out....oh,and thanks for the compliment.....Dave

I just finished replacing the clutch in my A a few weeks ago. Between the pressure plate (has the little springs mounted in/on it) and the flywheel, there is a friction disk. You can get to it by removing the pressure plate from the flywheel. Looking at it will tell you if the clutch is worn. More likely, the worn component in the clutch system will be the throughout bearing. If it is loose and wobbling, its shot. After replacing the clutch in my A, it needed to be adjusted. I am not sure how it would get out of adjustment by simply splitting the tractor, but I guess it could happen. It can be adjusted by moving the nuts on the treaded clutch rod that can be accessed through a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing tube, almost straight below the steering wheel bracket. Hope this helps.

some of the super A's will have the carbon clutch release bearing like the cubs.. if this bearing is worn out it is cheapest to replace it with a roller type clutch release bearing. If you decide to put a roller type bearing in the tractor you will need to replace the bearing carrier, because the carbon type bearing's carrier is part of the bearing.

Hey Justin, check out the H transmission thread posted by Jr at 18:30 or so two days ago. It's currently on page two 2/3 down.
