Dear Confused?

I have the remains of a 39 M. I know this because of the channel under the seat. It does not have a serial number tag on it though. I have heard that you can take casting numbers and cross them to serial numbers. Is someone pulling my leg or is this possible? The reason I would like to know is because the owner I received it from believed it to be an early 39 M.

If the tractor is in fact an "Early '39" it would not have a serial number tag on the left side of the bell housing, The serial number would be STAMPED on top of the Right hand frame rail channel clear up at the front just behind the grill & radiator so You can see it, about in line with the fan belt. The first few thousand H's & M's had the S/N stamped there before the tags were used. Let Us know if this is the case. :-)

I cannot find a stamped number on the frame rail. On the left side where a serial number tag would go is 4 drilled holes. The front rims look just like the rims on my dads F-20. The channel has the shift pattern numbers stamped into it. Where is the best place to look for the cast number? This tractor has a lot of hardened grease on it and it is not mobile or together enough to wash.

The only other place to find the serial nuber of the tractor is on a milled pad that is on the block just above where the magneto/distributor is. the blok will have the FBK, then the serial number and possibly a letter suffix. This info will tell us the serial number and which engine the tractor has (kerosene or distillate NO high compression gas engines were made this early)

The numbers on the mag side of my block are M-6943 - DJ, then the words Firing order, and underneath that 3 4 11 W. The 6943 is etched into the block. The rest is raised lettering. The 6943 is located mag side top left above the oil filter. I checked the 2 machined pads and they did not have any numbers or letters on them.

put your hand on the oil filter then let it drop down to the frame rail then move forward as far as posible were the frame rail ends ,then get a wirer brush and clean top of the frame rail and look for numbers. also 1939 and part a1940 M,s used large oil filter.

I do have the large oil filter, my pto is visibly different also. Checked frame rail with wire brush and there are no numbers there.

The channel was used in 1939s, 1940s and I believe some 1941s but I may be wrong. I cannot recall if my Grandpa's 1941 H has the channel or not. With regards to the date casting codes mentioned in the other thread, a 1939 ends in I, 1940 ends in J and 1941 ends in K. (Info. from Guy Fay's IH Data Book). Keep in mind that IH built up a bunch of castings when they started the H production in 1939. So some of the early 1940 Hs have the 1939 casting dates.

Guy Fays IHC tractor DATA book explaines casting codes in detail. It's briefly 2 numbers and a letter such as 3 11 R which is 3ed of Nov 1948. There is another use of R without two sets of letters so don't misread. Q is1947 P is 46 etc. A 39 M with low serial # would be worth a few $ more? R

about 2000 of the 40,s had the channel deck on them.there were probly about less than 500 39,s that were built with out the tag,and if built with out the tag it will be stamped on the right front frame rail,i have had 2 of them like this, coutrary to popular belive the 1939 was not a good seller,i think the farmers thought the tractor was to pretty to work.there are also many diffrences in the 1939 and part of 1940 tractors . the gas tank filler neck is set at a angle.the bracketts under tank are diffrent also.the top of the deck has the shiffting patteren embosed in the deck.many of the berrings in the tractor have a diffrent angle to them.the pto is also diffrent,i also think the front spindels are diffrent.
