Stick with the 6 volt system. These units "turn on" at a very low rpm, allowing care free operation at any engine speed unlike a lot of so-called "tractor alternators" that sell for as much as $89.00 and only excite at full throttle!(and sometimes not even then!) We are talking about a tractor which only needs the electrical system to start, power the ignition and a couple of lights. Most of the old tractors with 6 volt electrical systems are at least 40 years old and if the 6 volt system was as bad as these "12 volt cheerleaders" claim they would have been converted over to 12 volts in the late 60s and early 70s.
