PTO over haul on a Farmall 300

Looking for words of wisdom as I prepare to over haul my Farmall 300 High Crop PTO. It is working fine right now, but the main purpose (long term) I have for this tractor is to drive a 25KVA PTO Generator and a Brush Hog. That will take all 40 HP's at the PTO to drive the Generator and I figure after 44 years of service, it may need a "tune up". The band adjusters are below 3/8's of a inch from the top of the locking nut. I would prefer to replace the needed maintenace parts - versus chewing it up the first time I need it to really work. I have my shop manual and it seems straight forward to replace the bands, what other parts are commonly worn out and need replaced, I'd like to get most of the common parts up front - lessen my down time now that we have a cold spell again. Thoughts - suggestions - words of advise - prayers.... Source for parts?

Thanks
Dave

Just picked up a rebuilt planetary PTO from Worthington Ag. Parts in SW Minnesota tonight. Cost $450 with a core exchange. It also has a warenttee on it. Thought it was a good deal considering the Cokato salvage yard wanted $475 for a non warrenteed, used one. Kind of sucked though going down to Worthington. Truck broke down and had to wait 3 hours on the side of the road for someone to two me home. But that's another story.

The one I picked up was for a 560, but the 300's should be similar.

Thanks for all the advise. So far I lined up several 2+ inch wrenches, I have a good gear puller (I own a JD so tools are not a problem) two sets of bands, PTO shaft seal, 1 gallon of IH HyTran, one PTO gasket and I will be ordering a BIG O ring. Also - 5 gallons of kerosene for the heater.....

Thanks
Dave

I inquired at the local dealer a couple of years ago about replacing the bands on my 300 U. He told me they were $300 for the pair. I don't know if someone else has them cheaper. Its not a big job to change them - just a big job to pay for them.

Gibby:

You do need a couple of special tools for the job, and if yours is like mine, it won't come apart easily. A 2" combination wrench worked on the retaining nut, but getting it into position wasn't fun. You should invest in a good puller to get the brake drum off, if you don't have one already - might wait until you've got the cover off to make sure whatever you've got/will buy will fit.

I think the Farmall 300 is like my 300U in the PTO department. If so, once you've got all the bolts out to take the cover off, the only thing holding the PTO housing onto the rear end of the tractor is the o-ring between it and the transmission. If you aren't careful, you might end up breaking it loose, and have an unscheduled draining of your transmission fluid.

You probably will want to replace the cover gasket and PTO shaft seal while you're in there - pretty cheap in comparison to the bands. The retaining nut and lock washer were badly bunged up in mine (somebody used a chisel instead of a wrench to tighten the retainer), and I ended up replacing them also.

Good luck!

That big 0-ring is sure easy to hurt when you put it back together! Dad's been there, done that...

I take it that I should definately drain the trasmission before I remove the pto?

Thanks

If its the same as my 300 U it has its own oil reservoir separate from the transmission. I think there was a plug on the left side looking at it to drain it and if my memory is right it holds 2 quarts.

Up to you - I did it without, but was wondering if I was going to have a flood there for a while.
