Many people think that batteries are all the same. They just look similar but the cranking amps very considerably. If your batteries are depleting rapidly the amperage is too low. Two high quality batteries in series will outperform the two 12 in parallel over time. When in parallel, only one battery will be charged to peak. The regulator cannot sense the condition of the second battery. With two quality 6 volt in series it is like having one huge 12 volt an the regulator will charge both to peak charge. The problem lies is getting two good 6 volt batteries and maintaining them and their cables. Tho optimum solution is to get one 12 volt high amp off road equipment battery and mount it. Now the mounting is a problem but this can be remedied. When you get the starter whirling the engine at a good speed the cranking problems will disappear. Good luck
