I just bought an MD, brought it home and got it running. Its seems to run great on gas, but after switching over to diesel it skips on cylinder #4. I tried switching injectors, but #4 still skips. It also smokes alot until I open the bleeder on #4's injector - so I assume its getting fuel. Anyone got any ideas as to what's wrong??? I also changed the filters and the fuel.

Gene, I agree with JLE. If it runs fine on gas it is not a problem with the intake and exhaust valves, but is probably a sticking or warped third valve (decompression valve). Take off the valve cover and check the decompression valve on that cylinder to make sure it is closing or is at the same position as the other decompression valves. If it is not that valve it may be something with the injector pump. Roger

sounds like you may have low compression in that cylinder takes a lot more compression to ignite deisel fuel than gasoline, try pulling off the valve cover and look for broke valve spring or stuck valve on that cylinder, if valves train is okay go on to compression check.

Hi guys,I had printed <3> photos of tractors on your site ,One Mc-Cormick Deering W4 1943 ,one W4 1944 and one W4 1947 ,Submitted by Rob Hall, one by William from SD,one by Bob Lyons from BC.I still wonder if my tractor is a W4 or W6. Please somebody tell me the difference between the two.Mine has no tag or motor number ,serial or model. I love your site very much. Thank you very much Roger Dion

There are several things that could be wrong with it (1) low compresion ,(2) a cracked head ,(3) a starting valve not seating properly (4) cracked block , (5) a bad piston or rings on that hole, (6) Valves out of adjustment, (7) a bad cam lobe in the injection pump, (7) a blowen head gskt.(8) a broken push rod or rocker arm . Hope it is some littel stupid thing that is easy to fix good luck.

My bet is that the decomression valve is stuck open. It could be bent, happens when the engine is shut down (hot) in the gas running position, the valve is in the open position and warps. Good luck.
