dont worry about a thermostat to do that you will have to change the upper housing that bolts to the head you dont need one the water pump will circullate the water just fine

The Super A did not come with a water pump either. One was available for the C. It was standard on the Super C, Super A1 and later models. It will bolt on in place of the inlet elbow. You also need to change out the outlet connection and install a thermostat. To do a complete installation, you also need to change the head gasket, but you may already have that head gasket.

The A didn't need a water pump. You doing it just because you want to or are you having an overheating problem? Maybe your radiator needs boiling out.

Water pump was used on Super A after serial 356001 which had the C-123 engine. Parts book TC 39C page # 25

Jim and JLE,
I've been meaning to ask this and you all seem to know the topic.
My '53 Super A, FAA 343139, has a water pump and runs too cool in the winter. I've always assumed it has no thermostat. Now I'm questioning this. Where would the thermostat be located if it has one? It pains me to see this thing run so cool. after light chores the coolant is not even hot enought to warm my cold fingers.
Thanks,
David

Tractors from 356001 through 357958 were built in 1954 and had the C-123 engine with a water pump plus a number of other changes that can be seen in the parts book. These were designated as model Super A-1 and can be identified on the serial number plate with a serial number prefix of FAA-1.

That illustrates why a water pump shouldn't be installed without a thermostat. It should be in the outlet neck at the front of the head. You whould have to take the upper hose off to find it. You may have one in there that has gone bad. You might want to put something in front of the grill to block the air flow, at least as a temporary help. In cold weather that was necessary even without a water pump. That is one of the reasons shutters were available.

Yes, and use a pump from a super A . Remove lower outlet pipe on front of engine (2 bolts, belt and hose), install pump and a belt from a super A, hoses are the same. A relative simple job.
