How do you guys dispose of your used antifreeze? There don't seam to be any recycling sights around hear. I'm tempted to dump it in the drain at our local carwash. Dues most carwashes have sanitary sewer hook ups?? What about brake fluid

About 15 years ago I had a similar question so I called up the EPA. After about 10 minutes they got back to me and said dump it down the drain. I am not endorsing this, I am just relaying what the "experts" who get paid to protect us suggest. Bob M's suggestions look much better.

I never have too much. Filter it, use it to add to my leakers, and put in my sprayer over winter, etc. If you ask around there are places that will take it if you have a surplus.

I remember seeing somewhere (maybe this board?) where someone uses used coolant to load rear tires in place of calcium solution, avoiding the corrosion problem caused by leaking calcium solution. Have'nt tried it yet but it sounds like a good idea and a good way to get rid of old coolant.

Rod - Around here (upstate NY) there's several options: 1 - Anyplace that sells antifreeze is obligated by law to accept used antifreeze back in "reasonable quantities" anytime. Same goes for motor oil. 2 - The county DPW will accept used antifreeze, oil, pesticides, paint etc. in marked containers at their hazardous waste handling facility. There is no charge, but you must make an appointment prior to making a delivery. 3 - Our town hwy dept has a hazardous was drop-off days at the town barns on a Sat morning each spring and fall. Works the same as the county deal (must be in labelled containers, etc.)

Whatever you do DON'T dump this stuff on the ground or in the sewer! It's no good for fish, plant life, etc. And if a tree-hugger spots you doing it and blows you in, the fines are hefty.

Don't pour it down the drain; most municipal sanitary sewer systems are not set up to handle antifreeze solutions. Call around to your local auto-parts stores and tractor dealerships to find one that will accept your used antifreeze. Often they will accept it at little or no cost to you. AutoZone is a great one for accepting used antifreeze, oil, etc. DO NOT dump brake fluid down the drain under any circumstances. If you think antifreeze is toxic(and it is), brake fluid is even worse.

Where I am, waste disposal is governed by state and county agencies. I would call the county waste authority and ask them what to do with it. Maybe they can point you in the right direction. We have a household Hazardous Materials disposal program where we can take such things and dispose of them for a nominal fee. I wouldn't want to get caught pouring it in the sewer or a carwash drain. Those folks can be downright unfriendly about such things.

I re-use the antifreeze and never have any to get rid of. I filter the old stuff through a cloth, put it back in the antifreeze jugs and mark it as "used". I use it to top off coolant in my cars, truck and tractor. True, it is used stuff and the antirust agent in worn out, but is is good coolant for adding a little here and there.

I've got the same question and have not found the answer yet. I hope some one knows what to do. I do know you should not dump it down the drain, even a drain to the sanitary sewer.
