No spark at all means it could be shorted out or not a continuous circuit somewhere. I'd suspect the wiring first, you should have the battery's voltage all the way to the points when they are open. Is the coil getting voltage from the switch with the distributor disconnected? Is there still voltage on the distributor side of the coil before and after the distributor is reconnected (again make sure the points are open, they ground it)? If it has a ballast resistor check it too, might have overheated and cracked.

Nobody got around to saying the factory coil on any H is 6v. If the small connections are on the opposite end from the big connection, it is a 6v coil. Most coils are 6v and require an external resistor to run on a 12v battery. This is true of all GM coils until they went to electronic ignition. The coil supply wire was a resistor to drop the voltage to 6v.

If you need a replacement coil, and you are using 12v, get a resistor made for ignition systems from the auto parts store and wire it into the supply to the coil from the ignition switch and buy a new 6v coil. I have had trouble with 12v coils (they have an internal resistor) and with the external resistor you and the next owner will know to use a 6v coil.

Both the coil and the condenser are fairly inexpensive; you might want to replace both of them anyway.

Matt how long did it run when it died? Did it die abruptly?

Also, what was wrong with the timing?

If it had not been changed to 12 volts the coil should be 6 volts. I would check the ignition switch to make sure you have current through it, some of them are kinda touchy as they get old. If that is good, you hve current to the coil, you might check the points and condenser next. Seems like most times coils fail gradually, or just don't work when they get hot.
