I went to pick up my newly purchased farmall A today. What a surprise! I drove this tractor on Tuesday and it checked out OK except the problems I knew about. Today it would not start (no big thing) but it also was locked up in the rear end. The person I was buying it from had dragged it all over a field before I got there. I suggested we tow it to start it and this is when I discovered the rear was locked up. It was 15 degrees here last night but it hasn't been very cold before last night. I realize it could have been ice but I don't think it would have been frozen that solid. Needless to say I came home without a the A. I am too much of a worry wart to have one completely broke down before I ever have a chance to deal with it. And that's the way it is. I still only have my two H's that run like tractors should run. In fact I ran both of them today about five miles so I am not at a complete loss. Thought you might want to know how I came out with my A project. Ed

In addition to ice, lockup could also be the transmission is caught in two gears at once. It happens a lot when the shift lever gets worn.

Can you turn the engine over with the shift lever in neutral and the clutch engaged? If not, you've found the problem. To correct remove the lever, then use a big screwdriver or tire iron thru the shift lever opening to recenter all three rails. Then replace the shift lever - the transmission should now be free.

Yep - It could very well be that. I've had that problem when I took the shifter plate off and got the shifter forks out of place. I fixed the forks and that was it. Its easy to goof up, but not hard to fix (if you don't wreck teeth). If the forks aren't right it will try and put the transmission in 2 different gears at once and everything will lock up.

If it was below freezing the day you drove it then its probably not ice. However it does have ice it will freeze hard enough to lock up the transmission and trying to break it loose can crack the housing or break a gear. If you hold in the clutch and still can't move the tractor then its probably ice. The other possibility is its locked in two gears. The letter series Farmalls had a pin on the shifting lever that would wear and allow the tractor to be in two gears at once. If you can cleanly shift all the gears then its not locked but if you have trouble getting one to shift then its locked in two gears. You can take the top of the shifter off and move the gear back. The pin can be easily replace and fix the problem.

Ed when it warms up there, I strongly recommend you drain the 90W AND WATER and stick in fresh before you move the tractor.

Thanks Red for your advice. The only problem is I didn't bring the tractor home with me. The owner still owns it. In other words, I backed out of the deal. Ed
