I WOULD LIKE TO PUT TWO MOTORS BACK-2-BACK IN A FARMALL M. I DONT KNOW HOW TO PUT THE 2 MOTORS TOGETHER. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE A GREAT HELP. THANKS CHARLES IN MARYLAND.

Someone in central NE has a twin engine H set up like this and I can not remember who it is. Real neat job, they also have two seats in-line. Bill

A lot of ways to do this.Easiest is double roller chain with two gears.Look at Oliver tractor how transmission and rear end is coupled.Email me if need more info.

I agree with Dick. Getting the governors, throttles, ect. to work together will be the real task. Where will the radiator for the rear engine go? Will one starter crank both engines? Why not just install one V6 or v8 engine. Wasn't there an aftermarket product that put a V6 in these tractors? Good luck.. Dave BN

Charles,
For starters...put them front to back. This will leave you a place to put a clutch. It will also allow you to use existing cams since they will both be turning the same direction. Are you sure you can handle this project?

Detroit Diesel used to do that with their 16 and 24 cylinder engines. I think that they used two crankshafts. I think that TD-18's and TD-24's did something similar. There used to be alot of dragsters set up with two or three engines. Rather than placing the engines back to back, it would be easier to place the engines front to back. It will now bolt into a stretched out frame and you will have a way to start it.

Multiple engine set ups, crankshaft to crankshaft
in configuration, have indeed been around for many years. But it was always tough to get them
in "synch" with the older mechanical timing set ups. That problem has pretty much been eliminated with the use of electronics. Caterpillar is doing that right now in their 400 ton off highway truck, Model 797. It has two 12 cylinder diesels, 3600 series if I remember correctly that are coupled crankshaft to crankshaft. The technician adjusts the set up with a computer. To date they are working out well.

Back in the mid 60's GMC.put two 301 cu.in.v6 engines together they used one long camshaft and crankshaft,The blocks were made so they could be bolted together with dowels to align everything and made one heck of a v12 engine they put them in semi's. they had 2 distributors and 2 carbs,2 oil pans from the outside they looked like 2 engines AH,THE SOUND THEY MADE! kinda like an ALLISON aircraft 12cyl.they didn't stay around long tho, too costly they said also so much torque it was hard to keep a crank in them.they would run a 100mph pulling a double bottom gasoling tanker. SUNOCO oil used them for a while in the DETROIT area. only thing that would come close to catching them was the turbines that FORD motor was working on in their semi's at the time Ah the good old days of street racing EVERYTHING!
