My 977L Cat overheats after 20 minutes of use. I have changed thermostats, new antifreeze, and it still runs hot. On the left side of engine by the freeze plug there is a drain plug that I removed and was very surprised to not to see any water at all. Could anyone tell me what to do next. Thanks Larry

Are you sure you torque convertor is not overheating. If this overheats it overheats the engine for it is water cooled. To check it out due a torque convertor stall and watch how fast the gauge comes up , this will tell you what is really causing the problem.

When the temp starts to rise the next time remove the cap with the engine 1/4 speed and see if you got air bubbles coming up through the coolant,if you have it would indicaite compression leaking into the cooling system from a cylinder, this could be caused by head gasket failure, loose or perforated precombustion chamber, cracked head, cracked liner or a dropped liner,if your luck is good and you see no bubbles check to sse how effective the radiator is,there should be a considerable difference between the temperature of the top and bottom,if not the rad is not doing its job,the rad has to be clean both inside and out,the fan, belts and pulleys need to be in good condition,it is as important that the coolant can move through the rad on the inside as the air through it on the outside,is the other tempetatures ok torque and tranny.
Good luck
AJ

1) what do you call hot? I don't mean what does the gauge say, I mean what is the actual, real temperature?

2) Is the radiator clear of debris on the outside?

3) Is the rad core clear?

4) Is water flowing across the radiator header tank when 'hot'

So, four things you should already have done, but should now be what you do next, any order will suffice.

Hope this helps.

Regards, RAB

CHECK FOR LIQUID MOVEMENT AFTER OPERATING TEMP. I HAVE HAD THE IMPELER COME LOOSE FROM THE SHAFT ON WATER PUMP BEFORE .

Like Bob stated check the pressure on the radiator. I'm working on/going over a 977K that a customer just bought used. One of the first things I checked was the pressure valve on the tank. Having noticed that the bleed hole was plugged tight with rust and dirt, as I expected the valve asssembly itself was corroded, the rubber was rotten, and all in all it was pretty much worthless. The parts to repair it are readily available from CAT and not terribly expensive. Just my my opinion but it'd be worth going ahead and getting the parts and replacing it due to age simply because in checking it you'll already have it opened up. Too don't forget to check the rubber seal under the main screw on cap and replace it also if needed. Just a hint if you decide to pull and check the valve. Give each bolt several good hard hits with a hammer before trying to break them loose. Unless someone has had them out and never siezed them they are prime candidates to twist off given their length. A couple of good whacks will usually help a bolt like that break loose a little easier before it does twist off.

Larry, if you took out a 3/8"Npt plug with a 3/8"square hole in it you just accessed the intake manifold where you check boost pressure. Check for rad pressurizing and also check top and bottom rad temp and come on back.
Later Bob
