931B brakes

I have a 931B Cat loader. Is it common for the steering to only work properly sometimes? The left brake usually works pretty good, the right brake does sometimes but other times I have to back up and use the left brake. I shortened the linkage a little and it seems to work best when cold. Also the right brake works better in reverse and the left brake works better forward. I was told that dry brakes will act funny but is there something else I could try short of pulling everything apart? The machine only has 4850 hours. Thanks. Dave

Thanks Bob for the reply. I will look into that. The brakes seemed to work better before I had to pull the engine and tranny complete. Could the steering clutches just need bleeding or something? Sorry I should have mentioned this earlier. Dave

Dave the steering should work with a light toe pressure. I think the bearings an the ends of the steering valves have worn out and you are not getting enough pressure to release the clutches. Take the valves off and check the bearings. Reseal valves and replaces the bearings on the valve ends. Try it and come on back with what happens.

No they don't need bleeding Dave. The steering valves are pressure reducing valves. The farther you push them in the higher the release pressure goes.If the bearings fall apart it reduces the distance you push the valve and the release pressure aswell. Make sure the springs in side are good too. When you get that done adjust the brake bands as tight as you can get them. Make sure there is no peddal travel. If there is shorten the brake rods untill there isn't any, then back off to get right free peddal travel. Clutches should be released at half travel. Should also take PTO cover off back and pry on bevel gear to make sure bearings are good.Should have no side movement.

Finally had a nice day to see what the Cat is doing. The bearings on the cams for the steering clutches seem OK. The right clutch was a little loose on the mounting so I tightened it. The ground was wet and it steered good. I was using the backhoe for a couple hours and it still steered good. The pedals do go down almost to the end though. Before when I was using the loader the right brake would not turn at all when hot. I think I just need to adjust the brake bands. I got the Cat instructions copied and they say to measure all the linkages and adjust to specs before adjusting the brakes. Do you advice this or should I just tighten the brakes? It looks like I'll have to pull the seat off to get enough room to adjust them. Is there any common problems when adjusting them? I need to do a bunch of drainage work before it freezes and don't want the machine tied up till spring. Also what would cause pressure in the trans? Cat told me there was a bulletin on the breather. I took it off and cleaned it with brake clean. Should this be sufficient? Your assistance is very appreciated! Dave
