This nut turns onto the crankshaft and is recessed into the pulley. It has a 1/2 inch square drive female. I locked the crank by using the fan pulley bolts, then used a three foot breaker and all my strength. Then tried an oxy acetylene torch to heat the nut. Won't budge. bent the pulley bolts to near braking. I could step up to a 3/4 breaker bar, but don't know how to hold greater force on the crank, or if this is a bad idea. Pulley is aluminum. Engine is in frame (dozer)

Are there any threads showing through to be sure it's right hand threads? Try tightening it a bit ,anyway. Also, smack it with a hammer, while you got it torqued.

Got it by locking the flywheel throught the starter hole with a piece of spring steel and vice grips to hold it in place. Used a 3/4 breaker bar and a pipe. Popped right away. Thanks for all the advice.

The key is to take the time to get a good stop on that flywheel. Good luck

I had the same problem with the last one I pulled apart on an 60s 580CK. I finally got mad at it - pulled the starter out and wedged a pry-bar against the flywheel teeth - and then put a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter on the nut along with a 3/4 breaker-bar with a pipe on the end of it. Gave it one yank it came loose just fine. You could also heat the nut orange and then pour cold water on it - but that will ruin the temper of the nut.
I was afraid at the time that it might be a left-hand nut - but it wasn't.

Correction. Pulley is steel. I guess cutting the pulley and the nut is possible, but risky,
