I am looking at purchasing a JD450B. I am told that it has a rebuilt undercarriage and engine. It is not running as the son of the ranch owner where it sits ran a small tree through the radiator, but that is a little thing that can be fixed. I have a few questions on what to look for on the machine to indicate the wear and tear and if the u/c has in fact been rebuilt. Any suggestions? If the u/c is in good shape and the engine has been rebuilt fairly recently what is the estimated worth of the machine? What range should I be looking at? It has a ROPS, a 6-way blade and a rear mounted winch. The owner also said that the left track steering is rough. He has to really punch the lever to get the track to engage, but thinks that is is only an adjustment.

Thanks.....

Hey Allen, personally I would want to operate the tractor before i bought it (pig-in-a-poke) the undercarriage, the sprockets should not be worn off to sharp points, check the bushings (the part that actually takes the driving force from the sprockets) to see if they are new or have been turned (new is perfectly round, turned they will have a groove in them where they had been contacting the sprocket) bottom rollers can be checked by looking at the distance that the pad is from the rockguard, good rollers will make it stand up off the pad approx. 2 inches, more is good and down to 1 inch is ok but questionable, front idlers should not be worn thin look at the area the rail rides on the idler to see how thick it is new idlers will be approx. 3/4 of inch thick. I dont like to price another mans stuff but the 6-way blade and winch helps some, the B model tractors are older with dry steering clutches that constantly need adjusting, but think theres more problems in the steering clutch area, personally I would have him fix the radiator so i could operate it before I bought it
