I got myself in a mess. What would you do? With the track off, it will not move, and with it down in the water, I can't work on it. Is it an anchor now??? But seriously, what now?

I am going to give you a tip on how you could have got out without the track hoe. I have used it a couple of times but I will probably take some flak for my method. It is best done with a machine with a cab or rops. If you have a tree or something heavy you can anchor to behind the machine, run a chain/cable over the machine to the top of the loader bucket which should be raised a bucket height above the hood. Attach your chain/cable to the top edge of the bucket with it rolled back. Slowly dump the bucket and it will pull the machine backward. Keep shortening up chain/cable until you are out. Stay low in case chain/cable breaks.

GL,
Interesting, but I can see why you would want a ROP doing it this way. I was trying to inch back digging in with the blade and push with the bucket, but in the mud all it was doing was sloshing around and digging a bigger hole.

With the backhoe attachment I could have pulled myself out, but I had that unhooked to lighten up the load.

Thanks for the idea,
MrBill

I'm going outside tonight and tighen up the tracks on my loader! Stuff like that gives me the shivers. I don't have anybody close by with a trackhoe to help me out.

Glad to see that you are out of the water at least.

Best of luck.

As a rookie with a small dozer it always amazes me how fast one of these things can become a five ton doorstop.

What a mucking fess. I would jump in the mudhole and loosen track tension as much as possible. Then put a snatch block on the far left of bucket. Cable through that to a friend and truck. Then a short chain to attach to each side of the top of the track about 2 feet behind front idler, to form a yoke for the cable. Then max downpressure, forward left track ONLY with friend backing up truck. If you're lucky it will pop on. You may want to tilt bucket back to get higher angle on cable pull on chain. Lacking friend, you can do inch at a time with comealong, or with deft movement of bucket curl. Inch at a time and then retighten chain. I don't think I see a 4-in-1, but if so, you can actaully use that for another source of pull on cable/chain.

I tried to walk it back with the bucket but being down in the mud and on the slope all it was doing was digging a bigger hole.

The dozer being on the slope, when I was backing out all the weight was on the left track and backing out just walked it right off the sprocket. I thought the tracks were a little loose that morning before I started and should have adjusted them then, but decided to get to work. Bad move. Should have listened to my first instincts and adjusted them.

I located a guy close with a track hoe, and explained my predicament. He loaded it up on the trailer and jerked me up out of the hole. In the process, the track ended up on the rear sprocket and was staddling a low spot. So with the bucket down, the front is raised. It was getting late, so this is how I left it. The next time I am out there, I can work on it and get back to work. I was really worried about leaving it parked down there in the water for a couple weeks before I could get out there again. Now, that is heavy load off my mind knowing it is atleast out of the water.

I just wanted to share.....

Mrbill man I feel for ya! That looks like a mess, and although I haven't thrown a track yet, I've been stuck in the mud a time or two (4 times to be exact). Oh well I guess it goes with the territory when you're a newbie like us, live and learn.

Although actually now that mostly it's out of the mud hole, I think you'll end up managing ok. From what I've been reading once you know how, putting the chain back on isn't THAT bad. And at least you have a smaller crawler and not some gargantuan behemoth. I would think if you could get that front idler compressed really well and maybe jack up the one side a bit you could get the track back on without too much trouble.

Anyway good luck, let us know how you make out. I know that stuck in the mud feeling though, it sucks!

Remember to drain the steering cases...these things adore rust.

Oz,
I never got deep enough where water would have gotten close to the steering cases. So I don't think that is going to be a problem. But thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks Seann,
yes, I have put the other track on before. I threw it about a year ago. That was the first time a threw a track and was my "initiation" experience. I think where it is sitting now it should slip on like a piece of cake. I originally posted this as the mudhole picture. That totally sucks! Later it was drug out of the hole so now I can work on it. I had no idea what I was going to do with it down in the water.

I just thought I would share my initial predicament.
