JD 1010 Crawler Dozer: Diesel or Gas????

I have a 1010 Gas Dozer w/ manual 2-way blade that hasn"t run in several years due to chronic engine problems (needs rebuild) AND also due to loaning it to a brother-in-law who expanded his scope of work (wanted it to scrape drive, ended up attempting to dig pond - and swamped it, so clutches are a problem too). Have come across a rusty crusty mostly disassembled diesel 1010 with a hydro 6 way blade that supposedly has low hours since rebuild (engine has at least been kept in a barn) Now the question is, is the gas 1010 engine a better choice or the diesel???
I"ve heard that neither would win any engineering awards, with the diesel (usually the prefered choice)being a sorry gas conversion known for smoking and hard starting. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Where do you live? As far as repower I need to think on this a little bit but I think a 2010 gas engine has the same external dimensions . This engine was also used on some smaller Deere selfprpeeled combines 40 years ago.

The diesel will have better torque which helps, the 1010"s were never known as torque monsters to start with.
As far as the diesel not starting, I would have to attribute the lion"s share of that to operator error/ignorance, and lack of maintenance. You need to glow plug them even at temps of 60 degrees or better. The dash plaque says to glow plug for 30 seconds a cold engine above 32 degrees, and it goes up from there. I have personally started two different diesel 1010"s as cold as zero without ether, but both have new batteries, new glow plugs, and functional primers. You also have to glow plug them for up to 2 minutes, and they will slobber like crazy until the combustion chambers warm up some. If any part of the system is not up to snuff, you can have trouble, but that is not the fault of the engine.
Deere is only source for parts for engines, so that can get expensive.

Thanks for the response Lavoy,

I have been reading other postings on this site about JD 1010 Diesels and have come across references that Diesel Timing in the JD Manual is incorrect and that the accurate info on timing the engine can be found in the IT manual for the machine. If this is true it makes me wonder if this has alot to do with the poor starting performance/smoking reputation the 1010 diesels have.

I had never heard about the timing thing, that is kind of interesting. My brother just put a rebuilt injection pump on his 1010, and it was timed by the Deere manual, now you kind of have me worried.
As far as the smoke, I think a lot of it can be attributed to the 1010 being an indirect (pre-cup)injection engine. I have not been out and run my brother"s since they got the new pump on, but he says it is really responsive as far as throttle goes.

Hey Lavoy,

Follow the thread listed below regarding Diesel Timing and let me know what you think.
