Help!! Probably a simple problem but pretty major for me. I have only owned this 350b for 2 months and am constantly learning about this machine. I was out working in the trees yesterday and the right track jumped off the rear drive sprocket. I probably have the ideal setup; bucket loader and 93 series backhoe. I can lower the bucket and outrigger and raise the right side off the ground. I had some help stop by and we hooked a chain to track and the backhoe bucket to stretch the track out. We got close but we really need to back the tension off the track adjustment to get it back on the sprocket. On the track tension cylinder is the bolt next to the grease zerk the bolt to release the grease pressure to bring the sprockets together? And do I need to hook a come-a-long to the pulleys to bring them together or will they come together on their own? I am way out in the trees so I cannot get any other equipment out to it. So how do I get the track back on? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, MrBill

Mr. Bill, I used to take bolt out when the pressure was off which you have.I'm asumming you have track apart at master pin.Pull track under rollers and bring each end up over spocket and front bull wheel.Bring together with binder and chain or whatever you have and slip pin back in.Good luck and be safe.

Thanks. I think I got enough room to get the tracks back on without messing with breaking the chain at the master. I'll keep that in mind though.

I know someone that can sell you new undercarriage or anything else you may need to fix your crawler so it doesn't jump tracks. Email me and I'll give you his link and email address.

Thanks, but I am working on a shoestring and not ready to jump in and buy replacement tracks. They jumped because of operator error. Thanks anyway.

The bolt next to the grease fitting will release the grease from the adjuster. If there is any tension at all the adjuster will move back, probably not all the way though. To get it all the way back, you can take a piece of 4x4 between the front bucket and idler, and curl the bucket back SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY to force the idler all the way into the adjuster.Or pull it back with a comealong.Depending on how worn out the chain is you might be able to get it back on the sprocket. If not,you will have to break the track to get it back on. The lever on the outside is for a 3rd hydraulic function such as a 4 in 1 bucket. For point of reference,if you are operating on slopes,or in the woods, and don't need the Hoe,take it off,it only takes about 5 minutes once you've done it once or twice. Thats an awful lot of weight to be carrying around,it's hard on the finals, sprockets and tracks, and probably part of the reason you threw a track.

I think with all the pointers, I should be able to get the track back on. 5 minutes to remove the hoe? I know I have been lugging that hoe around and it gets in the way a lot. How is the best way to remove the hoe and be able to re-attach it? I could get quite a bit more done if that was not hanging off the back end.

Mr. Bill, The small valve to the right of the main bucket lever is for the rippers in the rear. On my 450C, I turn that and that switches the 4in1 lever to the ripper control. On your track problem; should be simple for you. In order to get the tracks together you need more slack, have someone hold a rag under the area of the bolt on the tension ram. Remove the bolt. There is a little stainless ball in there that will most likely come out, don't loose it. It is only about $1.00 at John Deere, but worth hundreds out in the woods as you tractor is worthless without it. It will be hard to see in all the grease that will come out, if you don't see it come out, thats ok. Use a come-a-long to pull the track together, keep a rag if the ball has not come out, if it's hard to pull, tap on the cyinder housing all around it with a hammer - don't hit the chrome though. Once you get it in place, lined up, and pinned then clean out a little of that grease in the bolt hole with a piece of wire or something, drop the little ball in, replace the bolt hand tight, pump some grease until the track starts to get close to the proper tension. You may see some grease come out under the cyinder from a little hole, but once that little ball finds its seat the grease will stop comming out. My experience has been to keep it a little on the loose side and add 1 pump at a time to get it to proper tension. Keep the bolt adjusted. Run it for a few minutes, check it, add a pump, run it, add a pump, etc... keep the bolt adjusted. Something most likely cause the track to come off - perhaps you could try to avoid what ever happened. I would order one of those little balls and get it in the mail in case you need it. Good luck

Thanks for the ball pointer. I didn't even know that was in there. The guy that was helping me Sunday said the same thing about re-adjusting the tracks. He warned if I pump it up too much all at once, I could blow the seals in the hydraulic ram. I think I know the reason the track came off. My fault, operator error!

My brothers 350 has a extra valve that acts the same way and we were told that it was for when and if you add something like a ripper on the rear of the machine at a latter date.

Thanks. I didn't think about controlling an attachment in the rear.

One other question. There is a hydralic lever out on the right fender past the loader control that I do not know what it does. It puts a load on the system either direction I push it, but I cannot see that anything is happening. What is it for? Thanks, MrBill

Mr Bill, I dont have a JD crawler, but I do have an IH crawler that has the hydraulic (grease filled) adjusters. On my machine the bolt adjacent to the grease fitting is the grease release port. If you crack that line while the track is under at least some tension the grease should squirt out (it does on mine), and the tensioner should retract. It may not retract far enough for you slacken the chain to the extent you can get it back on, but thats where to start. I'm no crawler mechanic, nor do I have much experience with crawlers yet (I've only had mine for 2 months too) so take this with a grain of salt. But I believe the method that's usually used to really slacken the chain is to open the grease port on the tensioner, and to wedge a block of wood between the sprocket and the track links. Then slowly and gently move the machine backward so that the block of wood is being drawn into the sprocket. This takes up the chain slack and will compress the tensioner, which should squeeze out the grease and allow it to fully retract (so that you can get your chain back on). But since your track is off, I guess you would have to force the tensioner back using the comealong or a porta power as you mentioned. I've also heard to be careful opening the grease port. My manual says beware because if you open it too far while the tracks are under significant tension, it could shoot out with high velocity. I just cracked mine open and the grease came out nice and easy no big deal. Just be careful while you're loosening it. Good luck
