My clutch drive plates are pitted (need 12 plates; $42.50 ea. at JD dealer!). Can this be machined at a metal shop? Also the drive plates are worn below specs on one side ($44.00 each!) This would cost more than I have in the machine. Any suggestions??? (this is a restoration project: but I'm just a poor farmer!) Thanks,

Thomas L.

Thomas,
Don't worry about the steel plates. Sandblast them and re-use them. As far as fibre plates, I can get them for you for less than half of Deere. E-mail me if you are interested.

Thomas, If this is not going to be a hard working machine just sandblast the steels match the fibers up equally on both sides and if the whole pack is too thin add another steel. This will give you plenty of service and save big bucks.
Good Luck Chuck

Check the specs on the clutch pack thickness and as Chuck said, just add in another steel to make up the correct height. Unless the steels are paper thin, this will work fine. A word of wisdom, the clutches don't like moisture, so if you can store the machine inside or under cover, it will help keep the clutches dry. It does make a difference, as I found out when I finally got a barn to put my 40C in. Also, in the bottom of the clutch housings, check to make sure the drain plug is in place and also, you can drill a couple of 1/8" holes at the low spots and then inset a cotter key. These will allow any water to drain out while keeping the bugs, etc from going in. An old JD mechanic taught me this trick. Also make sure the gaskets are good on the top where the adjustments are made.

I just purchased the plates and fibers for a JD MC which the number are the same for the 440. I purchased them a Owosso tractor parts, in Owosso MI. I know that they are on the web, but I could give you more info if you want. The parts are half the price of John Deere and they look exactly the same.
