i am curious how you giys move smaller crawlers and backhoes, like 10,000 lbs or so. 5th wheel trailer with a 1 ton? i have a backhoe (10,000lbs) that i would like to start towing to jobs, but would rather get like a 1 ton dodge with cummins and 5spd than a 26000 truck. tage would kill me! would only tow it like 10 times a year max. would this do the job? all i have now is a 1 ton dump with a 350 v8. always too afraid to tow it with that. seems like there is not enough power. so basically just tring to guage my options. do i need to get a bigger truck or what. thx

I have a 1979 toyota pick-up 5 speed with overdrive and a 20ft triple axle trailer that I haul my 450 c with. The neighbors laugh at me, just have to watch out for sudden stops.

i had a 350b john deere dozer. i replaced the broken 3 piont hookup that was broken. i put a 3pt bison ripper on it. about(12000 lb) i had a gooseneck trailer made to haul it. (3) 7000 lb axle all with elect brakes. (25000)wieght used a f350 xlt v10 dually for stabilty.
had no proplem driving in town or out. ps dsl engines are better for take off & feul milage. my v10 work good at take off.the cost between the dsl noise & maitance of engine. put me in a gas engine. i drive this truck everwhere.

1 ton chev should be enough unless you live in real steep country find a good 2 or 3 axle pintle hook trailer with REAL GOOD BRAKES evan a 350 should pull 10k fairly easy unless it is real high geared ( should be a dually ) i've pulled 10k+ with 3/4 and 1 ton pickups quite a bit and as others have said stopping is the issue good luck mike

we haul a 886 with loaded tires and case ih 2355 loader attached. (about 14,000 ) on a 30 foot goseneck with a 3/4 ton 4x4 dodge and it does fine.stopping is the problem you have to "drive" for everyone else on the road.

We use my dad's 91' Ford F250. 5 speed manual with no mods. Pulls a '01 John Deere 4300 compact TLB pretty nicely.

If the job isn't too far, i use my tractor to pull my dozer. If it's further, i use a one ton dually i have. Kinda nice to have the tractor on site, more times than not, they have a job for the tractor too, like rotavateing the spot i just cleared with the dozer!! I just charge all the hours as dozeing time, and tell them that before hand!! I've had NO complaints yet!! Robert

My father-in-law tows a pintle-hitch mounted tri-axle trailer with farm plates (23000 lbs) with a two wheel drive F-250 with a 351 cu motor. He has hauled a tractor as heavy as a 480 CK with loader an backhoe on it, as well as during harvest a 300 bushel gravity center dump box. He has brakes on two of the three axels. We have not experienced any problems thus far. Granted, we don't haul the grain very far, but the backhoe has been as far as 100 miles from home. Really just need to take your time and be extra careful of the other driver. Just my 2 cents.

As was mentioned, stopping is the major issue. I use a deuce and a half. No CDL required and with farm tags my annual ins and registration run $450 together. With almost 7 tons of truck it's no problem to move my 8 ton crawler on a decent trailer. And the 10 wheel drive makes for pretty good traction. Not built for speed but sure has plenty of low-end torque.

I once went upside down in a ditch with a rented pickup and trailer. Trailer (with 600 pounds on it) had no problem pushing the truck off the road. Sure got my attention about having enough truck (and a good trailer). Pay attention to your fears. And don't rely on just a big engine. As with tractors, weight's everything.

I am not sure where you are at but most states offer a farrm tag. There are limitations on the tag, such as 150 mile radious max, etc. I have a dump truck and that is what I use on it, under 24,000lbs.

You can pull a 10,000lbs back hoe with as small as a f-250, but, you need good breaks, and a good trailer. getting going is not a problem, getting stopped is the deal. I have a '81 chevy ( heavy 3/4 ) with a heavy transmition, 4/10 rear end, 350 v8, goose neck hook up, secondary breaks, etc. and have pulled a 43' dove tail goose neck with a d-5 cat and had no problem at all, moved it well over 300 miles. Your dump truck should do just fine.

Well I have hauled a 350B JD behind my F250 diesel, but I didn't like it, pulling was no problem, stopping was (trailer brakes failed, major pucker factor LOL) to be comfortable I would want a C60 or F-600 you should be able to find an older model that a tag wont be too expensive for at way less than the cost of a Dodge w/ Cummins.
