Went and bought an 84 Cat D-4E today to go with the rest of my iron(wife says I have too many toys). I've got some kind of manual that gives the capacities but is not specific about specific oils to use. Engine oil, fuel filter, antifreeze I'm ok with, how about final drives, trans+torque converter,+steering system+clutches and anything else I need to service? All this book states is refill caps.My JD is easier,1 oil does it all(I can see myself pouring the wrong oil in the wrong machine). If you guys can square me away, it would be appreciated.

Allen - trans, torque converter, steering and clutches are all one compartment. Use the engine oil you are currently using, in the tranny. Engine oil will not harm clutches.
DO NOT use 90 weight oil in tranny.
For final drives, use SAE 50 or SAE 90 GL-5, depending on how cold your area gets.

If it's a powershift, you really don't want to use engine oil in the trans. Can cause deterioration of clutches. A SAE30 transmission fluid would be better. I'm not sure on the finals....but usually an SAE 50 or so. But you can also use SAE90 without harm. SAE30 is probably a little thin for it and especially if you are in a colder climate.

I have a d4d,which is a little older than your dozer.I use 30wt motor oil in every place you listed.Even the hydraulic system will use 30wt motor oil.
