can anyone tell me what I will have to do to get a 1010 crawler to move that is locked up in the drive train somewhere? The gentleman I bought it off of was using it and the drive just locked up and he parked it there and it has sat there since.I have not went after it yet and was curious if there was some way to free the tracks to load it?Thank you.

I had the same thing happen to me on my '62 1010 (4 speed/no reverser). While pushing a load of dirt, I heard a loud "bang". I instinctively clutched and after a minute or so tried to let the clutch out. No such luck. The entire drive assembly appears to be locked in every gear to include neutral. Any ideas as to what is broken/binding?

I don't know much about this machine because I don't really know what it looks like. I do mechanic on heavy equipment for a living at a Caterpillar dealership. So for what it's worth, if this machine had something wrong in the drive train, you might be able to remove the axles, if they can be removed without removing the sprockets. Some dozers and loaders can be done this way. I hope that this could be some help.

Brian,
You may be able to get the tracks to turn by pulling both steering levers back about half way. That should be enough to release the steering clutches and not apply the brakes. Some trial and error here to get it right. However the clutches maybe stuck and you will just have to drag it on. Also this time of the year the tracks maybe frozen to the ground if so wait till things thaw or bring a big machine.

Good Luck,
Lee

Get it while there's snow on the ground-if the grousers aren't too good, you can winch it on w/o tearing anything up. Snow & mud are good for something after all, see?

Tracks don't lock up while you are running unless they are full of barbed wire. Drives lock up. You'll have to take it apart.

has it sat there so long that the tracks them selves are rusted up or is it locked up because it broke? What happened when he was useing it? did it just quite moveing?how long has it been seting on the ground with out being moved?

Sir, There may be a broken gear or bearing in the final drive, Take the bottom of the final drives to be sure there are no broken parts. On the top outside of the final drive housings, behind the sproket is a small cap, if you remove it and the bearing and the small gear the track should be free.
