Tracking down a blue smoke (lots)and excessive richness (dark brown at no load, warmed up)problem, and have done the following. Compression OK, new rebuild on heads (power cells inspect ok)new head gaskets, new injector nozzles set at 2000 PSI, All fuel line tight with no leaks. Tank filled with fresh #2 heating oil. Valve clearance set properly, decompression mechanism correct. So, this leaves just the injector pump? The main question is, is there a seal inside the pump that can fail, letting the lube oil get mixed with the fuel oil? And are there any checks I can do before sending it out to a shop? Also, does anyone know where I can find a manual on this pump? Any inputs are greatly appreciated, I'd like to get this beast finished up for the Antique Tractor pulls this summer.

Did I understand you right, you used #2 heating oil and not #2 diesel? I"m no expert but I think my books on my Case diesels specifically say to beware of the using anything but diesel fuel.

Thanks, Jim. The Service Manual says to fill with recommended number 2 diesel fuel. Talking to other folks, it was recommended to use #2 heating oil instead of diesel fuel from the pumps. (for increased lubrication qualities) Some folks have said that there is no difference, except for the taxes? Anyway, since you bring it up, I"ll drain the tank and filters and try using the diesel fuel and see if anything changes. Could be a cheap fix if it makes a difference.

This is a new tractor to me, my first diesel, so I don"t work it. Nothing I"ve done has changed the smoke output. I did check for intake and exhaust restrictions, even ran it with the manifolds off to make sure. An equal amount of smoke was being exhausted from each cylinder. I didn"t replace sleeves or rings, since the compression seemed ok? The wicks are in the rocker arms. I"ll check the timing this weekend. The pump doesn"t appear to have been tampered with, so I didn"t think about checking timing. I do have low oil pressue (20PSI), maybe too much oil being flung around for the oil rings to handle? I"ll keep plugging away and let you all know how it turns out.

What was the status before the heads were rebuilt?

Has anything changed?

I think this model has felt wicks in the valve rockers that control the oil supply to the valves, were they left out after the rebuild?

Have you checked injector pump timing?

Checked for restrictions in the air intake - birds nests, dead rats, etc?

What is your actual oil consumption in 8 hours of normal work?

Larry

Did you put new sleeves and pistons in, or just redone heads? Hone marks or grooves on cylinder walls will leave oil to be burned during compression. New sleeves may take many hours before rings are properly seated. Even with good compression cylinders or rings can be worn unevenly. I would say your problem is on the lower end instead of your top end.
