Bent Pushrods in 430

I have been tinkering with an old 430 I bought a while back. Engine was making a loud puffing sound. Removed the Rocker arm assembly today and sure enough, there was the cause. Both the push rods for #2 piston were crooked as a dogs leg. I can easily replace them but what concerns me is what caused them to bend. What is the most probable cause for this. Thanks for your help.

Make sure you are getting oil to the head. There should be a hollow metal stem that runs up inside the oil filter, make sure it is there or else you will not develop enough pressure to get oil to the head.

When a gasoline engine sits for a period of time, the carbon that has built up around the valve stems hardens. (Ask anyone who has an air cooled Wisconsin.) Most of the time, valves will stick open. If they're closed, and the carbon is unusually hard, it will cause push rods to bend. Remove the rocker arm cover (which you already have done) and spray all of the valve stems with WD-40. Use a "small" hammer and tap the rocker arm easily just above the valve stem. That will help work the lube down the valve stem to free up the valves. If the valve sticks down, pry it up. Repeat the tapping until it moves freely. Good luck.

Roger, Thanks for your reply. I should have added that this is a 188 diesel engine and apparently the tractor was being used when this occurred. According to the last owner the noise started when he was running the tractor. I remember my dad had a 430 one time and it did the same thing. Everything in the rocker arm assemble looks real tight, no loose ones or wabble in them. I thought this might be something that happens to 188 diesels when the get a lot of hours of them. I don't believe this engine has ever been overhauled. Someone told me he might have oversprayed it with either on some cold winter morning and caused it. Is that possible?

Walt is making an excellent point, especially if the bent push rods are going to "exhaust" valves. I've seen valves stick on 188 diesels but only if they were not being used for a period of time. Sticking valves on this engine are unusual. Anyway, good luck.

Ether can bend crank rods break pistons and other damage I would think it could also bend a small push rod. Ever listen to that rattle when starting on ether that's preigntion one of the most damaging things to a perfectly good engine. Walt
