Hy, I'm restoring a Case R tractor from 1938. I would like to know what type of gasoline (octane rating)I have to use in this tractor.
Thanks

Davide

Pretty much what ever you can run in your car will keep one of these tractors running. Octane ratings are a lot higher now than they were in pre-WWII so these things were designed to run on fuel that would kill a Briggs and Stratton. Look at your compression ratios and you"ll see what I mean.

Instead of buying higher grades of fuel you might be better served by just keeping it fresh with something like Sta-Bil or something similar. Most of these tractors don"t get lots of daily use and that seems to be a bigger problem than anything else.

I"ve found that my Case D"s will run just fine on fuel that"s been in the tank for several years as long as you don"t have any junk in the fuel system that plugs the filters and screens. With the current price of fuel, I"ve been known to take the nasty dregs out of old vehicle tanks (stuff that would be hard to get them to start, let alone run on!) and use it in my mowing tractor. I DO run it through a screen or filter first though.

Just my experience. I wouldn"t recommend fuel that has water, rust or other contamination in it, but I live in a desert and that"s usually not a problem here.

It really shouldn't matter. I generally run mid grade in my "L", and it runs fine. If you want to go out and buy the expensive stuff, I'm sure it will like it beter, but I don't think it'll matter either way.
