Have a 580 CK backhoe with a 159 gas engine. Generator idiot light came on. Full fielded the generator and the light goes off. Put a new Borg-Warner R230 voltage regulator on it and idiot light is still on. Anyone have any ideas? Wonder is this is the correct regulator, there was some confusion at the parts store if it was the correct one. Any help is appreciated.

I fielded the generator as you assumed and the field wire from the generator to the regulator is good. I'll check out the class of the regulator. Thanks for your help. Appreciate it greatly.

Charles, I assume that you "Full Fielded" the Gen by grounding the field Term on the Gen. If that is true you have a Class A Gen & Need a Class A Regulator.

When the Belt is off the pully, and you Jumper the BAT term to the Armature Term. The Gen should motor if the Regulator is correct. Do not ground the Field Term on Gen unless the wire to the Reg is removed (prevents damage if the REG is a type B)

Hope This Helps,

Is the regulator properly grounded? Could the "F"ield wire be broken between the regulator and the generator?
