Dave, I just repaired a similar problem on my 830 standard transmission. Yes I had to removed the steering colmn to get the shift fork cover off. The problem turned out to be a broken detent ball spring which allowed two gears to be selected at once. The spring was only a few dollars from the dealer, and the repair took about 4 hours for a novice (myself) to complete.

Hey Dave: Not a common problem. You will probably have to pull the cover.

John, FYI, I got the top of the trans off and we were able to fix the problem...I should have her back together tonight. Thanks again

Dave

John, I have taken the actual shift level cover off and it appears that one of the shift pens has riden up over another one. I friend of mine has told me that we need to take the whole steering column off in order to get at the place where we need to work. Is this your experience as well? Any suggestions?

Thanks
