Have a 1948 Case VA that is hard ( impossible) to start, especially if cool or damp. Someone suggested to heat carbrautor area with propane torch to promote starting. Dosen't sound like a wise option to me. (mixing flame and gas) Any suggestions/ feedback/ input appreciated.

Go to this site for an online copy of the case magneto book it will help you a lot in understanding how and what to fix to get good spark also how to time your tractor.

That was the reason that Lee and i put it up for. I was amazed to find out that you time the 4JMA mag by opening and closing the points. I am sure that will help a lot of people out there.

I agree with Walt; check to make sure you have GOOD spark. If you pull one of the plugs, reconnect the plug wire and ground the base against the block and turn it over to see if you have a BLUE spark. Orange isn't usually hot enough to get the job done.

Could be anything from a bad condenser to non-operational impulse on the mag on around. Many times ignition problems get blamed on carburetion because you can get it to run (or start) better by choking it or whatever... when it's really the points that need cleaning or some similar such.

Let us know what you find.

Sound like weak spark you should work the ignition system over from top to bottom.
Walt

PS use the porpane and when you get back to earth let us know how the flight was. giggle
