I've got a 430, with narrow front and manual steering. Can a power steering unit be added to this tractor?

I have the same setup on my 430 (narrow front and manual steering). My 530 has hydrostatic steering and a wide front. All was fine with the 430 until I bought the 530, and now I wish I had power steering on the 430 was well. Ignorance was bliss I guess.

Power steering can be added, the challenge is finding the full unit (pump, plumbing, reservoir and the valve assembly).

The pump bolts right up to the front of the engine on the right side, and drives off of the camshaft gear (I think). The reservoir appears to bolt to the front casting in front of the radiator and inside the grill screens, again on the right side. The steering valve assembly replaces the manual worm-gear assembly. The linkage (shafts and u-joints) appear to be the same for the manual and power steering units. In both cases the front u-joint yoke is secured to a shaft coming out of the worm-gear assembly or valve assembly via a #15 woodruff key.

If you can get a hold of a parts manual, there are a couple of pretty good schematics that detail both the manual and power steering setups...

If you look for a full unit...and happen to find two, please let me know. - Joe

DJL & Joe,

I agree with Camboted, I think it would be easyier to install Charlynn Power Steering set up.
I have a few parts break down on the 430 & 530 setup. Take quite a few parts to it. Hopefully this will help some? Mike

The easiest way would be to add a Charlyn unit on the shaft along side the rear of the engine block. The early 400b"s actually came that way. It wasn"t until later that they developed the sophisticated unit that is integrated with the casting on the front end. To be honest, I think the Charlyn unit works better. I"ve used both.

Is that the same unit (or same general design) that was a popular after-market item with the Famall M and H line? - Joe

That's the one. They sell on ebay all the time for around $250+or-. All you need is a pump that any good junk yard can supply, a bracket that you can make, hoses, and possibly some shaft adapters.
