I was out seeding yesterday and my 4490 started to act up. At first I thought it was the transmission because I was driving in 2nd and 3rd and it would loss power and smoke heavy (like two diffenent cluthes were Engaging and the same time) Until I pushed in the cluth pedal. I only had about 6 passes left so I tried it out again in secound without using the power shift. It would run for a while then when it would come under heavy load it would power out again until I hit the clutch. I would stop for a minute idol down and start again. The last time it happened it continued to power down after I engaged the clutch. So I shut the tractor down. It was running cool all the time. I got thinking about it and figure it could be the fuel filters. If it was out of fuel it shouldn't smoke very much, should it. Anyway I'am on my way into town to pick some filters up. If anyone has any ideas about what this problem could be it would be greatly apprieciated. Thanks!

Might have cracked pistons at valve recess cut in them an they are expanding under load causing friction(heat)calling for more fuel that is causing black smoke an lack of power. Hope not your problem but had it happen on 1070

I"m still not convinced your power shift\valve isn"t the problem. Will tractor\eng run ok in any of the ranges? 1st,2nd,3rd,rev?

Hey Curt: If it was fuel, the fuel press. lite should have come on. Another place they will starve for fuel is the sediment bowl. I have seen moss in the inlet line plug the line & still have a clean bowl.

White or black smoke. White too much air not enough fuel. Black too much fuel not enough air.

The tractor is spitting out black smoke. I put on new fuel filters but it didn't help. I'am starting to think it might be the turbocharger but it doesn't seem to rattle.

Since it is occassional I would lean towards a bad injector or the pump. You should be able to put a long rod against the bearings on the turbo and listen to it by putting the other end against your ear. It should just have a high pitch whine not growl or make grinding noises.
Walt Let us know what you find, can't be cheap at any rate.
