My '54 SC jumps out of 2nd gear when the engine is holding back the load. I thought I didn't have it all the way in gear the first time it did it and made sure it was in gear the second time and it came right out of gear again in less than 10 feet. What should I look for? The transmission is not noisy.

I had one last year where the the spring broke under the cover that holds the gearshift on. The broken part was laying on the rail, preventing it to fully engage. Mine was a easy fix, hope yours is the same. {I had to "tilt" the cover off to retrieve it}

I've spent a many many hours in the seat of a 53 SC, a lot in second gear. We didn't have this problem. I agree with Walt, better pop off the cover for a look. This should not be happening.

Must be a common problem. My 51 with eagle hitch does the same thing. I generally use third gear instead of second. No more than I use it, this sure beats tearing into it.

Worn or broken gears. Worn or bent shifter forks. Indent spring and/or ball worn stuck or weak. Sounds like you need to remove the top and take a good look at everything.
