Hi I have a 1390 (4wd) and the brakes are either on (wheels locked) or off. Sometimes when reversing one wheel will lock for no apparent reason. Can anyone tell me what type of brakes the tractor has? How difficult it is to overhall them? What might be wrong with them? I was wondering if they are drum brakes and the linings have come away from the shoes? Your thoughts please guys!
Many Thanks -Tom ps. Any photos of what the brake set up looks like would be great!

Tom.

My understanding of this model is that it is has shoes and drum set up, the 1490-1494 went to oil immersed discs. One possiblility is that one of the oil seals, bearings or what ever in the axle assembly has failed and is leaking oil into the reduction housing. On the transmission side of this housing is a weep hole that is designed to let oil out in this instance, if it is blocked and doesn't let oil out of the housing you may get oil backing up in the reduction housing and therefore soaking the brake pads in oil rendering them useless. Do you have oil coming out of this weep hole? Does it seem to lock up one side only? You could also try the David Brown forum at>Link
