I have a 930 diesel (6 spd 1961)and noticed black thick oily water coming from the radiator cap and running down both sides of the nose. Is this a cracked gasket or head... or both? I did check the archieves and read something about an oil cooler also but being not too famliar with this tractor I don't know if it has one or not? Will it damage the engine to operate it this way for short periods? I recently purchased an IT manual from this web site but I haven't had a chance to look at it. Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ron

The 930 has an oil passage going through the block and heads to oil the valve rocker arms. Oil pressure far exceeds the pressure in a cooling system. When those o-rings are missing or fail to seal, oil enters the cooling system. O-rings are supplied in the head gasket set to seal those oil passages. Make sure they're installed or you're going to have the same problem again after replacing the head gaskets.

Roger,
Does this mean the heads are cracked or could it just be the gaskets and o - rings?

Thanks,

Ron

Since these Case heads have been known to crack, make sure you have them checked. Having oil enter the cooling system does NOT necessarily mean the heads are cracked.

Well, no one like bad news but the truth helps, so thanks.
Can the heads be repaired or do they have to be replaced? and ...are they (heads) hard to fine for this tractor? any idea on cost for replacments?

You probably have both a blown head gasket and a cracked head. The oil in the antifreeze is more than likely the head gasket. But damage of the head gasket either came from age or hydraulic compression of water that seeps into the cylinder from a crack, when cooling. The cooler referred to for 930's and 1030's is in front of the radiator. Case-o-matics have one built into the radiator but that won't apply for a 930. Hope this helps but probably not what you wanted to hear.
