They do make noise in the indirect gears,SL & SH should not be used for heavy pulling. If the noise has just started or become worse then you may have a problem, when the transmission cover is lifted the S ranges are right at the front of the gearbox. The transmisson will run warmer in these gears. Hope this helps Richard.

thanks a lot . it really whines in these ranges, thinking about buying this tractor off a neighbor that is quiting farming hes 92, and would it last you think if a man didnt use these ranges, and if not would you have to tear the trans, all the out to put bearing in it ?oh ywe does this affect the low and high ranges? i am familiar with a int. 140 from one end to the other but not this model, want to get away from fast hitch to 3 point, and will sell out the int and equip. againTAHNKS

The 'S' range box or creeper gears are a 2 speed constant mesh spur gear set on the input side of the main gearbox. It gives extra ratios which were designed for fertilizer spreading, spraying and light draft work like planting and inter-row cultivating, they do whine. Inspection of the transmission can be carried out by removing the gearbox top cover after removing the steering box. (there is a bolt under it) The transmission is self contained with the shafts supported by 2 end plates seperated by spacer bars and lifts out of the cast iron main frame as a complete unit including the diff, but the final drives & rear axle must be removed from the main frame to get the gearbox out to work on. Whenever I have been into a Brown gearbox it has been for other problems and not the 'S' ranges. By what you are saying thre is probably little wrong with the tractor, the creeper gears would probably have had little use. I am not familiar with the I.H. 140, I have seen 1 here on a farm just down the road, but I have only been living in New Zealand for 18 months and the 140 was never imported to England where I come from,I had to sell a David Brown 780 Livedrive 6 speed, but I have increased New Zealands population of Farmall H tractors by 1! Moving half way round the world has intoduced me to a lot of unfamiliar (to my eyes) tractors! Hope this helps.
