VAC GOVERNOR RUNNING WILD, HELP

I need some help with the governor on our VAC. It's the ball type. I've had it apart and cleaned all the goup out of it, smoothed out the rough spots on the cupped disc, and made sure the shaft turned free with no binding. The balls themselves didn't have any flat spots. I put the governor assembly from the 49 VAC onto a 201 engine that we are going to use for pulling. When we give this tractor some throttle the governor opens up the carb right away to wide open throttle. What is the correct way to adjust the linkage for the throttle? Has any one else had the problem with the governor opening up right away? Our first pull is next month and we want to get this tractor on the dyno and ready to go. Thanks, Dave S

Well, I have 5 VAC's, and none do that. I take it by ball-type gov, you mean the early type with the governor cover on the timing cover. 2 of mine have this type of governor. There is a spring loaded peg in the cup that slides into the camshaft, and one of mine had a collapsed spring. The other problem I have had is if the governor spring is either weak or the wrong spring. I get me springs from CASE, they may be a little pricey at times, but at least it is the right one. What will happen a lot of times is the governor spring is only meant to let the governor "float" at a certian position, and if the cam spring under the RH side of the gas tank where the foot throttle connects with the hand throttle is broken(very common), then the only spring retracting the foot throttle mechanism is the governor spring and it prematurely wears out from all the jarring.

1031D, There was no spring in the hole in the camshaft on the 124 vac motor. I don't know for sure if this is where you are talking about. I stuck a magnet in the hole in the camshaft and it must be hollow most of the way through the cam. Here's my #608-897-3109 if you want to explain it over the phone. Thanks, Dave S

I tried to call you before but didn"t get an answer. The camshaft is hollow to the end of the first bearing, as it has oil holes in it to allow oil presure to the governor. In the cup-shaped ball race there is a metal rod with a a rounded tip, and I think it is about 5/16"od. Behind it is a spring. Push on the plunger and see if it comes back out. It should stick out about 1/8". If the spring is shot, it won"t extend and retract with presure from the governor paddle and it will either idle or go to the floor boards, but nothing inbetween. The other problem that I noticed today in my shop notes was that you could not mix governor linkages either. They had an early one with a small mounting tab that held the rod and a later one with a long casting with 2 guides in it for the rod, and for some reason I could not get some of the parts to interchange. I have 2-3 salvage VAC"s that I pick parts from regularly, and some of this stuff you have to be careful of what works better with what.

I've got one with the same problem. Make sure you post the solution when you get if figured out.
