Okay that subject line is a little hopeful. I a lurker here on the board mostly but am going back to ND to move my grandfather's Case Model S tractor at the end of May. What I'm hoping will happen is that I can crank (hand crank) it over and have the thing fire right off... which I know isn't going to happen. If I can get spark out of the magneto I'm going to replace the wires and plugs, flush the gas tank and lines, check or replace all the fluids and give it a try. I've been told that the engine is free and does crank over by hand, but there has been no attempt to start it in probably 30 years. Any bets as to whether it'll start or not start? Also any suggestions on what to do or check before I go out and try to break my arm? I know (or think I know) all of the hand crank things not to do... this is how we started this tractor as long as I've been alive.

I just got my S started for the first time in 6 years. You may want to pull the air cleaner off and take an air hose and blow out as much of the carb as possible before trying anything, in the short time mine sat it ended up with a lot of egg sacs for various insects blocking the fuel. Certainly looks like someone has taken care of that one even without it running in 30 years.

Lee, before you try to start the tractor take the valve cover off and make sure the valves are not stuck. I've bent pushrods in a couple of tractors because the valves were sticking. In my opinion I would rather start it with the crank or the starter. I made a mess of a DC I tried to get unstuck pull starting it. Good luck.

Doesn"t the S have a starter on it, it has lights. Why don"t you take a 12 volt booster along to crank it with. The 12 volts willl sure spin a 6 volt starter. Save the crank for after you get it running right. GOOD LUCK Tony

It does have a starter on it... but don't know if it works, the tractor hasn't been started in 30 years but probably hasn't been started by a battery in 50. We always just crank started it.

There's a real good chance the starter will work, especially with 12 volts going to it. We've done several that way. It doesn't hurt the srarter either. I would definantly try before I spent hours on a crank. Tony

Good Luck that looks like a nice old case. I have the magneto book if you want a copy let me know and I can e-mail it to you. It will help alot in timing the tractor as it times by seting the points.
Walt

If you wouldn't mind, I'd appreciate a copy of that book. I've been putting everything I've found into a 3-ring binder to take up with me.

Thanks.

Replace all the fluids, don"t trust anything that"s been setting for years; if costs a problem at least drain and inspect (rust from condensation? water collected? chemical/physical breakdown of lube?)...and if you drive it watch all seals like a hawk: always real dangers of shrinkage and/or deterioration that could have one or more suddenly go bad ...or you could fire it up and drive it all the way without a bit of trouble, these things are funny..good luck

sounds like fun i like to squirt a little oil on top of the pistons then turn it over by hand helps to lube up the cylinder walls little

Thanks for the reply. The current owner told me that he has been doing this every month or so since taking posession of the tractor back in the 80's. We'll see... I had planned on pulling the plugs and spinning it over a few times before trying to start it. I'm hoping that I can just drive it up on the trailer... or do what my brother said, drive it the 70 miles to it's new temporary home. I plan on taking plenty of pictures regardless... I live in SC and it'll probably stay in ND.

nice looking old S chrome strips and all, why dont you save a lot of hard work and if the belt pully is on it belt from another tractor for first start in 30 years or pull it around the yard, you may crank till you run out of air. lol tom

Pull starting, if I decide to go this route, what gear is best to pull start a tractor in... 1-4?

Thanks... I'm thinking I would have thought about that a half hour into cranking. Make a note... pack a tow strap.
