How does one access the shims in the steeing "gearbox" of a late model SC? I don't suppose I'd be luckey enough to simply remove the three bolts at the base of the steering column and go from there...? Thanks, Glenn F.

Glen, it's pretty easy. Take off the transmission cover. Remove the sheet metal cap that covers the nut on the end of the steering wheel shaft, unscrew the nut (remove cotter pin first). Remove the horozontal steering shaft or just slide it over and out of the way, remove the three bolts holding the column on, drive the shaft out of the transmission cover from the bottom up. Your shims will be dangleing from the stering shaft by this time. Bruce

Thank you Bruce. I have quite a little play in my steering box. I have already turned the shaft 180*. Do you suppose removing a shim or two will solve my problem? Thanks, Glenn F.

Glen, the shims are there to correctly preload the bearings on the steering wheel shaft. If you have end play (up and down movement) in the steering wheel shaft, removing shims to correct that will help. If your steering wheel shaft is not loose, removing shims will only tighten the steering wheel shaft bearings, preloading them excessively, making no advances in your loose steering problem and making the steering shaft harder to turn. Thanks Bruce. I'll be getting my tractors back from my brother's (winter storage) pretty soon. I plan on looking into this. Glenn
