Yesterday was the funeral for 39 year old Elkton SD fire fighter and EMT Emmett Kuehl. He passed away Tuesday from injuries he received while fighting a controlled burn that got out of control on Saturday. Truck got stuck in the mud. While attempting to pull it out something broke, and Emmett was struck in the head by the hook from the tow strap that came back through the windshield. Emmett was one of those guys that was involved in everything, and would do anything for anyone to help them out. South Dakota lost a great man. Be careful out there guys. DK

Last weekend 2 eastern Iowa dairy farmers over 60 years old were killed by bulls. One of the bulls went thru a fence. I am sure the gent thought he was ok. Always be careful and if you are in the dairy business seriously think about AI.

Very sorry to hear about the loss of a fellow firefighter. Will keep the family in our prayers. We can never be too careful and controlled burns are not really that and always as dangerous as any other fire. Had a guy in this area get killed a few years ago by the same thing using tow straps and mixed with chains make them more dangerous pulling a tractor out. Life safety is always first over property conservation.

Hey DKASE, Hows things your way? 1570 is running. I understand that they were pulling with a farm tractor and the pin broke. The real danger with ropes/straps is when some idiot puts a log chain on one end ,the rope will hold and the chain breaks sending it on a one way wave of destruction! We had a log chain break and smack the cab on dads 970 and go another 50 feet! The other stupid thing people continue to do is let kids ride in loader buckets, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB! Being 5 miles from Elkton I knew the victim, hits home when it happens to someone you know, be careful this spring guys!

My thoughts and prayers go out for his family.
From a fellow South Dakotan up here at Watertown.

On a side note: You have to question the wisdom of some of these so called "controlled burns".
The other night the entire town of Watertown lost power when a "controlled burn" caught a pole on fire near the WAPA (Western Area Power Administration) complex.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Those tow straps make me extremely nervous. I was just informed minutes ago that my next door neighbor was mauled by his bull. He will survive but is really beat up. BE careful out there everyone!

I have a small Limousin bull 5'4" at the shoulders and about 3000 lbs. I know he is just a big teddy bear but I never turn my back on him.
Farming is number 8 on the list of most dangerous jobs so like the man said be careful.
I have seen chains and cables and straps all break and when they are stretched out the can snap back with unreal forces. I am very sorry for the fireman but I would have thought that his traing would have been better than that. I hope in the future they use this accident to let others know how dangerous it is when putting a strain on any type of pulling device.

PS don't stick you hand in a running Baler (Don't ask)
