I was plowing last weekend when i noticed the clutch not disengaging until a couple of seconds
after i depressed it. That happened about 4 or 5
times so I unhooked the plow and headed for the barn by the time I got the tractor to the barn
the clutch wont disengage at all. My question is what would cause this to happen without any prior
warning, and is there any tricks to getting it unstuck short of splitting the tractor and replaceing the clutch? any information would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

If it is truly stuck, you may have some gunk build up on the clutch causing it to stick. Have you been draining the clutch housing when changing the motor oil? I would remove the covers and inspect it. You probably can clean it with diesel fuel. You can probably unstick the clutch by pushing it to start it while in 4th gear, then idle it down and hold the brakes to try to make the clutch slip while moving.

I managed to get that clutch unstuck today.
after taking that inspection plate of the side
of the tranny. I was looking for this spring loaded pin the the book claims is in there, Im not sure if what I found was supposed to be that
but it was threaded and I just put a bolt in it
and with a little pressure from a pry bar ,got the whole unit to slide back and forth.
After that I put it in 4th gear and just rocked it back and forth a little bit and thats all it took. In regards to draining the oil out of the clutch housing, I had just changed oil last week
and did drain the oil out of the clutch housing.
However I only put in five quarts like the shop manual says it takes, when in fact it took 6.5 to get to the fill plug. So the lesson I learned is my shop manual isnt worth spit ,and I still need to learn how to inspect and adjust the clutch.
Just wanted to thank everyone for their Ideas, and vent a little. Thanks.

How much clearance do you have on the clutch. press it down by hand until it engages the throw out bearing. You should only have about 1 in of clear play. If it goes all the way then you know whats wrong. It not releasing the clutch. This could be a lot of things since it happened all at once I would surely look into the system to see why. Better to be safe than sorry. If all looks Ok then adjust the clearance on the clutch rod from the foot lever to the bell housing. Walt

pull the inspection cover off of the bell housing and inspect the clutch throw out fingers. sounds like you have broken or worn out fingers or possibly a bad throw out bearing.good luck;fran
