Case 1070 Powershift Question

Is it normal for the transmission to make a noise in reverse, or is that an indication of a problem soon to arise. The tractor shows 1800 hrs, and from all indications probably is correct. The noise is between a squeal and a whine but is not a typical gear whine. It gets louder as the rpms increase. I am not familiar with this transmission so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Squeel is normal . Also when you push clutch in engine will change sound. You probably found out you can not put reverse shifter in reverse with out slowing engine.Recomend you slow engine when you release clutch. Engine has lots of low end torque an does not have to be running fast to pull. Also --very important do not use pto with shifter in reverse-

"very important do not use pto with shifter in reverse"

Please explain. I have a weak PTO brake on a 970 and generally the unloaded PTO is spinning. Plus there have been a few times I backed the MoCo (lifted, not cutting) short distances with PTO running.

????

Short distances(times).. will not hurt it. It is when you run it a long time such as on a silo blower or Stationary work as some one mentioned. We did it an had to replace .50cent shim but had to fix it.There is a bushing at rear of power shift holding powershaft from engine an if you are in 3rd p shift there is no difference in rpm between p shift an pto shaft-drop down to intermideate p shift p shift rpm is slower than pto witch keeps running at engine rpm -drop to low p shift an difference becomes greater but still not much but when you put p shift in reverse p shift is turning oposite of pto shaft an that is when continued use is not recomended. As for pto turning i suspect it has a worn brake pad or sometimes they have broken there mounting .Pad is only small-1in x2 or there abouts (long time since i seen one)

I asumme you mean do not use pto for stationary work such as an irrigaton pump with powershift in reverse and gear shift in neutral. There is a decal beside pto lever about that.

Do not do stationary PTO work with powershift in reverse. You can run a snowblower without any problem. The whine you hear in reverse is the planetary set turning at engine speed backwards. Put your auto trans. in your car in reverse and backup at 20 mph and you will hear the same whine. Stan
