How do I find out the age of an older Case tractor. I was told it was built around 1954.
This tractor has a front end loader and I want to know if the hydraulic unit takes regular oil or hydraulic fluid.

My local Case/IH dealer said that Hy-Tran was acceptable for my '49 VAC you may want to double check with yours. #20 engine oil in a hydraulic system could be bad for seals or o-rings if they have ever been replaced.

I have a 1951 VAC and the owners manual calls for 20weight hydraulic oil. I think any tractor that new will use some type of hydraulic oil but not the same type as you would use in something built in the late 60s or so.

1954 was and odd year for serial numbers and you could be confused as to which system to use for finding the year of your tractor.

Today's Featured Article - Reflections of the Fifties - by "Country" Elliott. I remember rowing up in the 1950ís in a small, rural town in northwestern New Jersey. The closest town to ours was only 3 miles away, and there were seven dairy farms in the areas of these two country towns. We had 5 acres, and because my Dad was a salesman and not a dairy farmer, he let the Bockovens, who owned the Willow Tree Dairy farm most of our land. ... [Read Article]
