L Clutch Chatter

I have a 1937 Case L. The tractor has play in the clutch when it is engaged with the engine. This creates some chattering when the engine is running and the belt pulley turning. When I disengage the clutch, all is quiet. The pinion bearing is new and the transmission bearings are good. Is there such a thing as the splines on the input shaft or clutch being worn creating this play? I took a 2X4 and put drag on the turning belt pulley. This quieted things. One mechanic told me this was normal for a Case tractor. Is it???

I'm not sure that the problem is in the clutch, but I'm not clear on what you mean by "play"? If the clutch clicks into lock (over the center) then there should be some play in the linkage, depending upon wear. This is normal. The pinion set is sold as a matched pair and the lash needs to be properly set upon re-assembly. Did you do this when you put in the new bearing? We had a DC that did this and our problem was in an improperly set pinion gear. LOL!

I checked the pinion gear lash and it is set to spec. When the clutch is locked (over center), I can turn the belt pulley about 1/4 inch each way. This is why I thought it may be the clutch.

Sounds like you are correct. The hub must be worn or the rivets broken. I believe you'll have to split her open.
