My tractor is having a hard time getting into gear as when I press the clutch in and try to put in in forward or reverse, it sounds like gears grinding. It seems like if I have the fw/rev in neutral, then the gear shift goes right into gear but doesnt move of course and vice versa. I can put the clutch in fw or reverse if the gear shift is in neutral but cannot put both in. Any ideas what it could be?

My clutch got stuck from condensation forming in, on, and around my clutch and pressure plate from temperature and humidity changes in the spring or fall. Some people keep a little pressure on the pedal when not in use to keep this from happening. When you see the cast iron on your machine sweating, that is probably when this happens. Good luck and let us know how you make out. thansk

Well, I went out to my tractor and planned on towing it in gear like you said. I started it and idled it very low, slipped in gear with a little grinding. Drove around to the street to tow it and it must have freed itself as it seems to work fine now. Any way to prevent this from happening again? Thanks everyone for your help.

I had a 530 case and when u would push in the clutch it would chatter i dont know if that is what you are explaining but this resulted in a new clutch because the pressure plate was chattering... It aslo slipped. but i dont know if this helps any but best of luck. Jordan

Anthony,- your making it sound to me like your clutch disk is stuck to the pressure plate. try towing the machine in gear while pushing the clutch pedal in and out and this might free it up. It worked for me on my 580ck.

Ray,
Thanks, I will try that. I am starting to wonder if it was caused by me when I was using the backhoe and pushed the machine using the backhoe while in gear. It seemed to happen after that. Could that cause it to happen?
